Hong Kong’s Next Chief Executive? (closed)

Hong Kong will have it’s next Chief Executive (after Tung Chee-hwa and Donald Tsang) in March 2012.

Who do you think will win? Why? Who would you prefer to win? Why?

What do you think of the process of choosing the Chief Executive (chosen by an election committee of of 1200 members) ? When writing the above questions, I initially used the phrase: “Who will be elected? ” Would ‘selected’ be a more accurate word?

Update

After a bitterly fought selection contest, Leung Chun-ying emerged victorious and will be Hong Kong’s new Chief Executive? What are your thoughts on the scandals that plagued the candidates during the campaign. What do you think of CY Leung as the incoming leader of Hong Kong?

  1. Finally, CY Leung was elected and will be Hong Kong’s next Chief Executive. Although some people think that this election is not fair, it has become a fact. It is useless for the people who oppose the result. It will only expand the conflict between the government and the Hong Kong citizens.
Actually, I don’t think there will be any problem if CY Leung be the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Many Hong Kong people were affected by the negative news and did not pay attention to his platform. We should focus on his platform instead of his negative news. In his platform, we can see there are many policy that have high feasbility and which good for us. For example, he suggested to reject to receive pregnant women who are come from the mainland of China giving birth in Hong Kong. He also suggested to provide free education for 15 years. They are all able to provide us a better life. That’s why I think he is suited to become our next Chief Executive.

  2. At last, CY Leung will be the next Hong Kong Chief Executive. I do not know this is good or bad for Hong Kong, but I know that if he is elected to be the next Hong Kong Chief Executive, we need to trust him. According to the result of the election, CY Leung had 689 votes. It is 60.9%. By comparing to the previous results, Tung Chee-hwa got 80%. Also, in 2007, Donald Tsang got 81.1%.

Actually, I preferred Henry Tang to be the next Hong Kong Chief Executive instead of CY Leung. Since Henry Tang has been Chief Secretary for Administration before, I think that Henry Tang has more ability than CY Leung to be the next Hong Kong Chief Executive.

However, CY Leung is elected to be the next Hong Kong Chief Executive. I need to trust him can make Hong Kong better. Therefore, I think all Hong Kong residents need to support our next Hong Kong Chief Executive.

  3. The Chief Executive is the leader of the whole HKSAR. This year, the forth Chief Executive was elected. To every Hong Kong citizen, it is an important event. In the next five years, he will lead us as a leader.

In this election, Mr. CY Leung was elected. Most of the citizens satisfied this result. It is because in the every survey, Mr. CY Leung had a higher support then the other two candidates. Also Mr. CY Leung always went to different districts to visit the residents in the public estate and the people who live in the old districts. He knows what the middle-class and the poor need. In his platform, we can find many of his policy can really solve the problem which affects the middle-class and the poor people. Therefore, I think it is acceptable that he was elected as our new Chief Executive

However, this election has only 1200 committees. It cannot represent the whole society. Also, every party only vote for one particular candidate. They are not voting according to themselves. Also, there are some bad news comes. For example, Mr. Lau (who supports Mr. CY Leung) invites the committees from the walled village. Also, it seems that there was a man who is in the triad. Also, Mr. Henry Tang was also found that he had another lover instead of his wife. On the other hand, some representatives from Civic Party said that the Chinese government is controlling the result of the whole election. But the most important thing is that Mr. Henry Tang spoke out the discussion of the Executive Council. This makes many representative changed their mind and vote for Mr. CY Leung.

For me, I think the result is satisfied. First of all, Mr. CY Leung introduces many good policies which are possible to do so in his platform. For example, he suggested to 35 thousand rooms of the public estates for the citizens who cannot buy a house. He also suggested the free education for 15 years. These policies can effectively help the citizens. However, Mr. Henry Tang’s morality has a big problem. He knew that the content of the Executive Council should be kept as a secret. However, he spoke out that Mr. CY Leung did not let Metro Broadcast Limited to continue running the radio service in Hong Kong. This is a big mistake. On the other hand, Mr. CY Leung was always be the most popular to be Chief Executive according to different survey. So, I think Mr. CY Leung was elected as the Chief Executive is acceptable.

  4. Although the election was end, I also want to give some comments to the choosing process. This election was bring out by 1200 election committees, but in fact they should not represent all of us. China had said that we have the voting freedom but the most important election- the chief executive election. If the 1200 election committees are choosing our Chief executive, we can not choose the Chief Executive we want, so it is unfair. Also, the election committees may receive the order from China that they need a Chief Executive that support the Chinese government. Then Hong Kong may become another China, which is like in the prison, we can’t use the internet to search something that the China think it is bad, like the 6.4 event, we even can’t use the social network, like Facebook, Twitter, etc. If Hong Kong become like this, many people will not want to stay here.
At last, I want to say that Hong Kong need a Chief Executive that most Hong Kong people agree, the only method to achieve this is to have the Chief Executive election by the Hong Kong people.

  5. I think CY is a new choice. We should give him a chance.
“HK people really need a ‘wolf’ to guide themselves!”
    according to the Communist.

  6. Who will be the next Hong Kong Chief Executive? Currently, there has been more and more people concerned about this question as it affects our whole society. Different people has their own thoughts about the three candidates, mostly about Henry Tang and CY Leung as they are more likely to be elected. Finally, CY Leung has been elected, with 689 votes to become the new CE of HK for the next five years.
Choosing a chief executive for HK, I think the most important condition would be the working ability and the policies. However, the focus of the election was changed into scandals of the candidates after a few weeks. Though scandals of both of them came out during the election, I would prefer Henry Tang than CY Leung.
Henry tang had experience of being the Chief Secretary and Financial Secretary before. His experience of being officials is way more than CY Leung. Also, he had built up a good relationship with the rich and powerful people. This would probably help him to implement his policies easier in the future.
Though Henry tang had a lot of scandals, such as illegal buildings was found in his home and extramarital affairs of him was exposed to the public. However, these are his personal faults. It would not affect his policies and therefore his scandals are not related to public interests.
Although CY Leung’s scandals seem much less than Henry Tang, his scandals are mostly related to public interests. Firstly, he has been one of the adjudicators of the project of designing West Kowloon Cultural District, but one of the winners has conflict of interest with him. CY Leung has also been the school management committee of City U for three years and most of the students had negative impression towards him and said that he is autocratic. It would be rather serious if such an autocratic person become the leader of Hong Kong.
Actually, what we can see on the newspaper or through the mass media might only be a little part of the truth but no matter how the result is, the election is unfair as Hong Kong people cannot vote in the election. In other words, Hong Kong people do not have the right to choose the chief executive who leads them. That would be rather unjust for only 1200 people to elect HK’s next chief executive who will be leading more than seven million people in Hong Kong.

  8. I would like to choose Henry Tang . He had the experience of being the Chief Secretary and Financial Secretary before.
He knows what are the fanancial problems in Hong Kong.He would make use of the money in a suitible way to solve the problems. Also,he is smart to creat a better Hong Kong. who can carry a big respone.
On the other hand,he knows a lot of rich men or bussinesemen and there is a good relationship between them. Then,He could gain lots of supports form them when he was trying to hold some big or important events.
Although there are some negetive news related toHenry Tang,it will not affect others who supports he very much. We believe that his telligent ming and working ability could lead Hong Kong in a succesful road.

  9. If i could choose ,I will choose C.Y.Leung.Because he knows more about the grassroot in hk than Henry. I think he will make hk to be a better society. Henry seems have more scandals than CY.Therefore,I think CY is the most appropiate one to do the Chief Executive.
However, i cannot vote in this election. And i think Henry will win because the rich men and businessmen will support him.this is because Henry focuses on them more than CY is.
I also think that Henry Tang is not a responsible person and he lies a lot because of the news.

  10. I will choose Henry Tang because he knows many richs and powerful people that hold many rights and this will probably help Henry Tang to win the election and the proceed of the law or measures that will solve the problems of the public better than what the other nominees can do that is less efficient than Henry Tang. Although he was found that illegal structures were in his home and he has another lover except his wife outside, though ‘ Knows the laws but breaks the law’ is wrong, the working ability of Henry Tang and his good relationship between other countries can not be neglected. When we choose a chief executive, or no matter the monitor of the class, the very first thing we need to consider is the WORKING ABILITY of him and how big changes he could make (good) to solve the problems of others, so I will choose Henry Tang but not CY Leung.

  11. I generally disagree that Henry Tang should be the chief executive of Hong Kong. Firstly, he has lied to the public that he didn’t know about the illegal underground basement in his residence. That has made people think that he has low credibility. Secondly, after the news of the underground facility was disclosed to the media, he simply let his wife take all the responsibility of building the illegal basement.

However, some people may think that Henry Tang should be elected because he had the experience of being the Chief Secretary and Financial Secretary before.

  12. Henry Tang will win, this is not even a competition. Hong Kong will do as it always has, which has allowed for the city to reach the status it is at today. C K Leurng will just oppose the Chinese Government, and this will cause a potential demise to Hong Kong. It is appalling that so many people think that if elected C K Leurng can change anything. As is Hong Kong is just a city, and someone who acts as a wolf in a small city has no place.

  13. If I need to choose one from them, I will choose C.Y. Leung because he was a grassroot before so he may knew more about the life of grassroots more.
Looking back at Henry Tang. Firstly he was from a rich family so definitely his noesis to grassroots was fewer than C.Y. Leung. Secondly Henry Tang always makes speeches which were almost all in inappropriate tone. For example, he made a sppech that young generations need to take responsibilities, and he cautioned them for slamming others because of opposing views. Then he stressed the need to compromise and simplify complicated issues. He further said young people should not close the door and act like emperors. That he doesn’t want to see politics lead to a bloodshed, leading to a road of no return and end up like a fatal car crash. ( from wikipedia) His emotional quotient is quite low I think. Lastly Henry Tang only cared about the commercial business, and I don’t think he will stop helping those property agencies. So the grassroots will be ignored.
As a conclusion, I prefer C.Y. Leung more than Henry Tang.

  14. Small things can tell a person’s real personality. If any of the above writers had watched the comments made by C.Y. Leung yesterday about Henry Tang. They should ask themselves can someone with such narrow minded and petty can become a leader?

  15. I think the process of choosing Chief Executive is ridiculous because the new Chief Executive will be the leader of Hong Kong for 5 years.Every Hong Kong citizens should have their rights to vote.Chief Executive is one of the key factors determine the future of Hong Kong.It should be chosen by all Hong Kong citizens instead ofchosen by 1200 people as they cannot represent the choice of Hong Kong people. It is also unreasonable as the openness of the politics is very low under this process. We did not know much about the 1200 people so actually we don’t know whether these people have ability to make a good decision for us.
I suggest that every citizen should have their vote instead of the process now because this process can successfully show the wish of Hong Kong people and it would be more fair as the new Chief Executive represents the majority in Hong Kong.

I think Henry Tang would win as he has a better realationship with the China government. For example, for the June Fourth Incident , the comment of Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai and CY are”and adversity” and ”tragedy” respectively, buHenry’s comment defends the government. He blamed the Hong Kong people and asked them to think further.Although his comment was the stupidest,it defended the government and it made the”grandfather” happy. From this event, wee can know that he always flatter the China government and this helps him to gain a better realationship compare with CY and Rita.
Although I think Henry would win,I prefer Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai to be our next chief executive. We would have an universal election in 2017 so we need a strong and experienced leader to prepare for the election and Rita fulfils the 2 conditions.Besides, more Hong Kong people support Rita than Henry as Henry always defends the China government. That’s why I prefer Rita to be our chief executive.

  16. In fact, I don’t think Henry Tong and CY Leung will be a good or an able Chief Executive who, most Hong Kong people think, is the representative of the Central Government. However, I think that CY Leung will be a better Chief Executive than Henry Tong.

There are several reasons for my preferring CY Leung to be the Chief Executive. He has well-prepared for taking part in the election. He has collected a lot of data about many aspects of Hong Kong daily life, such as economical situations, the problems of the gap between the rich and the poor as well as the problems of housing. CY Leung has a team which assists him in collecting the above data and looking into the ways of establishing the future SARS Government in 2012. Although CY Leung is considered to be one of the members who works for the benefits of those who support the Central Government , he is very diligent in creating a better Hong Kong and tries to solve the problems that Hong Kong faces.

On the contrary, Henry Tong is not eligible or suitable for the post of Chief Executive, from my point of view. I think he only works for the benefits of businessmen and big entrepreneurs. He will not work seriously for the benefits of the poor or the middle class. Although he has worked for the Government for a long time, he is actually a real businessman. I think he is a better businessman than a person who is capable of being an able Chief Executive.

In conclusion, I prefer CY Leung to Henry Leung in the election of of Chief Executive.

  17. I’d just like to add a quick comment. I find that, on average, secondary school students in Hong Kong nowadays are much more politically aware than they were 20 years ago. I guess the lack of awareness among previous generations was at least in part due to the British colonial government downplaying civic education in the local curriculum.

  18. First of all,I think it is useless for us to discuss about who will be the next chief executive of Hong Kong because we do not have the right to join the election.Of course,I also feel that it is unfair for us that we cannot join the chief executive election because we are also Hongkonger and howcome that our desire can be represented by 1200 members?Their situation in the sosiety are higher than us and absolutely their political stance must not be the same with us(the citizen of the basic level).Although this opinion was already expressed to the goverment in recent years by different people, the goverment still refused to have a public chief executive election in 2012 but promised it in 2017.Therefore,may be we just wait for 2017 to choose the one that we want to be the leader of Hong Kong and ignore the election in the coming year.It is because no matter who is the next chief executive of Hong Kong,I’m sure that it is the selection of the Chinese goverment. However,if we just ignor the control of China and you ask me who would I prefer to win in the coming election.I would still tell you ‘I don’t know.’It is because up to this moment,no one has state clear that he or she would run in the election,so I really don’t know who can be chosen.May be CY LEUNG and Henry Tang are the hottest person that to be the chief executive but I think both of them cannot lead Hong Kong to a new era.Anyhow, the right of selection is not in our hand, don’t be so nervous on this issue.Although the result of the election may bring a little change to our coming quality of life, the process is none of our business!

  19. In the coming election of the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, I think CY Leung may win. As the survey of the University of Hong Kong pointed out, people supported CY to be the Chief Exucutive is about 50% which is higher than that Henry Tong with 20%.

For me, I would prefer the one who has the ability to lead the whole Hong Kong to win. In my opinion, the recquirement to be the Chief Executive is he/she needs to have passion.People with passion can do things well as they won’t give up easily. Besides, the experience of being leaders of organisation is also important. Once he/she has no experience, it would be difficult to lead Hong Kong to walk in a successful road.Actually, I don’t really know the efforts they’ve put. I think they should hold more speech to the public to explain their strength so that they can gain other’s support.

Talking about the process of choosing the Chief Executive, I think it is quite unfair. As it will be chosen by only 1200 people, it cannot reflect what people thinks about as there is more than seven million citizen. To tackle with, there should have rights for every citizen to vote for, although that’s not easy. In conclusion, the coming Chief Executive should benefit Hong Kong as a whole.

  20. I think although Hong Kong is known as a democratic city, the process of electing a chief executive is not democratic now.In my opinion, the way to elect a chief executive democratically is to be elected by us.However, the chief executive is elected by a group of committees. It is ridiciulous that the chief executive, who is chosen to help Hong Kong people,is not chosen by all us.
I think Leung Chun-ying. would win.His rival,Donald Tsang,is suspected to have a affair with another woman. Also,he has a poorer relationship with Hong Kong citizen, and Leung Chun-ying has a positive image to us.No matter who will be the chief executive,I do hope he can make Hong
    Kong better.

  21. I had read the story The Tortoise and the Hare for many times when I was small. Frankly, I always thought that the story was absurd because the hare was fast enough and it took a nap was not a big problem. It could still win the game if it was having a high tea. It was impossible that the hare lost the game. However, I discovered that as a matter of fact there are some stupid hare when I grew up!

Although we have nothing to do with the chief election (because there are only 1200 members can vote for the election), we can take this opportunity to analyze the performance of the candidates. The election has already tell us that the person who originally has a greater opportunity to win is now lagging behind the other candidates. According to the Hong Kong University Public Opinion Programme’s survey, the ratio of supporting the former convener of the Executive Council, CY Leung has significantly ahead of the former Chief Secretary for Administration, Henry Tang. This result is totally out of the expectation of the others.

Although the election of the Hong Kong Chief Executive has not started yet, I think that CY Leung has already win the game. Yes, he may lose the election in the future but he has proved that nothing is impossible in the world. Everybody didn’t think that it is good decision that he joined the election at the beginning. However, he can change the people’s mind and now he is even more popular than Henry Tang. This is also a kind of victory to him.

On the other hand, the media repeatedly reported some scandals of Henry Tang and his personal image has been affected. He was originally highly expected but he has fallen short of the others’ expectations. The most funny thing is: He asked the principal of a primary school “What is the generous proportion of the students getting in the university here?” How stupid he is!

We need a person who is responsible and smart instead of an idiot who has a bad impression to be our next chief executive. I am not sure who is suitable to serve this role but i know that Henry Tang is not a good choice.

  22. People always say that Hong Kong is a democratic society. However, I don’t think the process of choosing the Chief Executive in Hong Kong is democratic.

Chief Executive is the leader of the government and he/she is important to the policy-making of Hong Kong. Policy-making will affect the citizens’ quality of life directly. Therefore, the Chief Executive should be elected by all the Hong Kong citizens according to their own will instead of a election comittee which only consists of 1200 members. The way of choosing the Chief Execuitive nowadays is also unreasonable as I don’t think 1200 members can represent and vote the Chief Executive for the 7000000 citizens in Hong Kong.

I still don’t know whether Henry Tang or CY will win as the Mainland government hasn’t declared its will. Also, both of the candidates have their own predominance: Henry Tang has more administration experiences than CY and CY has higher support rate from Hong Kong citizens. However, I hope that CY will win in the election as he was born in a low-income family and may bring out more policies to help the poor people in Hong Kong. Also, I don’t think Henry Tang is suitable for being the Chief Executive as he doesn’t really know the society changes in Hong Kong (he still thinks that there can have another LEE Ka-Shing in Hong Kong if the workers work hard )and pay attentions to the citizens’ opinions( he thinks the opinions from the protestors towards the security problem of HK police are totally rubbish). Therefore, I don’t want Henry Tang to be the Chief Executive.

  23. I think the process of choosing the Hong Kong Chief Executive is unfair because there are 7000000 citizen in Hong Kong, however, only about 1200 people can vote for the Chief Executive. It will be unfair because these 1200 people cannot represent all the citizens in Hong Kong. I think all the citizen should be having the right to express theis opinion and choose the Chief Executive who they support. Many people say that the place of Chief Executive was already chosen by the Chinese Government. I agree with this statement very much because the people who want to become the Chief Executive have been always making good relationship with the Chinese Government. Therefore, I think every citizen should have the right to vote for the Chief Executive and the Chinese Government should not disturb the process of choosing the Hong Kong Executive in order to make this process more fair.

I think Leung Chun-ying will win. It is because he has good relationship with the Chinese Government and the government will give him ultimate support.
However I would prefer Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai to become the Chief Executive. It is because she has experience on policy making. Also, I think she is a responsible person. Therefore I would prefer Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai to be the Hong Kong’s next Chief Executive.

  24. I think each Hong Kong citizen should have the right to vote for chief executive because the chief executive is the head of the government and it represents the people of Hong Kong. I think having the right to vote for the one who represents you is very reasonable but now not every citizen can vote for chief executive. As a succesful city with freedom and democracy, I think the election of chief executive should be more fair and everyone should have a vote.

I hope Henry Tang won’t be elected as chief executive because he don’t understand the life of poor people and the things he say is often too emotional and he didn’t think before he act.For example, he said young people should not close the door and act like emperors and that he doesn’t want to see politics lead to a bloodshed, leading to a road of no return and end up like a fatal car crash. (From Wikipedia about what Henry Tang said) I don’t agree with what he said. I think he isn’t suitable as Hong Kong’s chief executive with what he did and his bad way of talking. He once said that the people protesting about the security when Li Keqiang came is completely rubbish.I think each person has their own way of thinking and he shouldn’t scold people with bad banners.
